Asbestos

Six main types of Asbestos

Chrysotile

This is the most common type of asbestos and is often referred to as "white asbestos." It is a serpentine mineral that is soft and flexible, making it well-suited for use in products such as insulation and roofing materials.

Crocidolite

This is a type of asbestos that is blue in colour and is also known as "blue asbestos." It is a less common type of asbestos, but it is more dangerous than chrysotile because its fibres are more easily inhaled.

Amosite

This type of asbestos is also known as "brown asbestos." It is a less common form of asbestos that was primarily used in insulation materials.

Anthophyllite

This is a less common type of asbestos that is grey or brown in colour. It was typically used in products such as insulation and cement.

Tremolite

This is a type of asbestos that is found in a variety of colours, including white, green, and grey. It is less commonly used in products but can be found in some types of insulation and building materials.

Actinolite

This is a less common type of asbestos that is found in a variety of colours, including green, grey, and black. It was not commonly used in products but can be found in some types of insulation and building materials.

What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a dangerous material that was widely used in construction in the past – before anybody knew about the damage it could cause to the human respiratory system.

Although asbestos was banned in Australia back in 2003, the reality is that thousands of buildings and machinery parts still contain it.

Asbestos is carcinogenic (so it causes cancer). If inhaled, it can cause serious health problems. As a result, it’s of utmost importance to know whether there’s any asbestos present in every home, workplace or public building.

If you believe your home or workplace does contain asbestos, it’s crucial that you have an asbestos assessment carried out by a reputable environmental consultant such as 6Minerals.

What does asbestos do to humans?

Mesothelioma

A cancer affecting the pleura (the lining of the lungs) and the peritoneum (the lining surrounding the lower digestive tract). Mesothelioma is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos and almost always fatal by the time it’s diagnosed.
